Live – Hublot’s Magic Gold Ferrari Unico
So if you’ve been following the watch scene for a while you may have heard of a new alloy developed by Hublot. This alloy is a supposed mixture of gold with ceramic and it promises to be the first version of something every clumsy show off like me has prayed for…scratch-proof gold!

We got to handle a fully working prototype last week, and I can say that while the colour will be something that people will complain about (it looks nothing like gold as we know it) the actual technical aspect of it is fantastic!
I really tried to get at this case using various abrasive instruments! My best attempt was with a set of keys that I really thought had done some damage, until I saw that the only damage was the metal had come off the key onto the watch case, which was easily rubbed off *sulk*
Above you’ll see a comparison of the colour with that of the rose gold Big Bang. It’s very much muted, and more brown/green than any type of gold that we are used to seeing on watches or jewellery. This I imagine is caused mainly due to the added ceramic and whatever techniques Hublot have used to fuse the 2 materials together. Having come this far I would guess we will eventually see new shades of the metal which will probably aim to take the colour back to the shiny substance we are used to.
The problem in most peoples eyes will be that there is not finishing of the case as such…it is sandblast finished at every angle with no alternative polishing or brushing…how you polish a case that can’t actually be marked is another question, though they manage it with ceramic so I’d have hoped it could have translated into this also. Hopefully that will be the next stage of development.
In the meantime, it is a very big step in the right direction towards solving the problems of someone with lots of disposable income! *wish that was me*
